The new HERS (Home Energy Rating System) is highly impacted by energy loss in the winter time and energy gain in the summer time. One of the most important factors impacting heat loss and gain is the choice of windows. There are so many choices: number of panes (single, double, triple), coatings (Low e), treatment between panes (argon, krypton). It is really difficult to make sense out of it. My advice is: go to this site www.efficientwindows.org. It was developed jointly by the Center for Sustainable Building Research, Alliance to Save Energy, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and provides good explanations and a user friendly selection tool to help end users choose the best windows for their location and needs.
